Robert Wadlow was the firstborn of a couple of normal size and was born February 22, 1918. By all accounts, Robert was a baby of normal size to eight pounds and six ounces, but it quickly began to grow – within twelve months, it has ballooned to just over forty-four pounds. At the age of five he was five and a half feet tall and at age 9, he was six feet two inches.

His family was constantly harassed by stallholders who beg for a chance to show the human marvel. However, the family insisted that Robert Wadlow experience as an average education as possible – given the circumstances. Wadlow even joined the Scouts when he was thirteen years and has become the largest Boy Scout in history – he was seven feet, one inch and weighs 340 pounds.

In high school Robert was popular and active in many extracurricular activities, even serving as publicity director for the directory. It was fully accepted by his peers. However, when he attended college, he lost that acceptance and fought with the looks. It bothered him so much he gave up and returned to his parents quite penniless.

It was then that his brief stint with Ringling Bros. began. His contract of 1937 was short and had very strict conditions and terms. First, Robert did attend shows at Madison Square Garden and Boston Garden. He himself would be to display only twice a day for three minutes. He refused to allow any exaggeration of its height through press releases or standard sideshow trick improve height, like platform shoes, top hats and trick photography. In addition, Robert does it display in the center ring and refused any association with the sideshow. Despite these restrictions, Robert has proven to be incredibly popular.

Robert was so popular that after his time with Ringling Bros., he signed a contract with The Fabulous International Shoe Company. The package included a bit of travel and personal appearances and a little less than a year Robert had made over 800 appearances and traveled over 300,000 miles. Perhaps most importantly, the company has provided Robert with shoes for free – a big problem when you’re a size 37 and shoes cost more than $ 100 each.

Robert feet always gave him great harm, and because of the weight they support, they often formed blisters. Believe it or not, it was a blister that killed the gentle giant.

On July 4, 1940 – after appearing in a Forth of July – Robert developed a blister. The blister became infected and Robert could not check into a hospital because they could not accommodate a man his size. The infection progressed as Robert brought together in a makeshift medical facility based in Robert hotel room. Surgery, antibiotics and blood transfusions were not sufficient and Robert died July 15, 1940 at 1:30 am. He was only twenty-two and eight feet, eleven inches.

His funeral was attended by 40,000 mourners. It took twelve bearers to lift the coffin thousand pounds. A life size statue of Robert Wadlow still holds in his hometown of Alton, Illinois.
