The Baatara gorge waterfall, also known by the name of the Baatara Pothole Waterfall is an unexpected waterfall situated in the village of Balaa in the middle of the 2 cities of Laqlouq and Tannourine in Lebanon falls from a height of 255 metres(837 ft) into the Baatara Pothole, a cave of Jurassic sandstone located on the Lebanon Mountain Trail. The cave is commonly known as the “Cave of the Three Bridges”.
The waterfall was first discovered by a French bio-speleologist , Henri Coiffait in 1952. He was accompanied by the Speleo club du Liban in the mapping of the sinkhole completely in the 1980s. the place can be reached by voyaging from Laklouk and passing the village of Balaa. The location is also called as the “Three Bridges Chasm” (in French, it is known as “Gouffre des Trois Ponts”) is a five-minute ride into the valley below where one sees three natural bridges ,rising one above the other and extends a chasm descending into Mount Lebanon.
It can only be viewed during the spring season, especially in the months of March and April when the snow melts making a 90-100 meter (300-330ft) outpouring a fall behind the three bridges and then drops down into the chasm of 250 meter (820ft).. A fluorescent dye test conducted in the year 1988 reveals that the water emanates at the spring of Dalleh in Mgharet-al-Ghaouaghir.
